FAQ

CloudMount contains rclone, the same code as the command-line tool, and uses its backends and configuration format unchanged. It adds the parts rclone doesn’t have on a phone or in Explorer: the integration with the system’s file APIs, a wizard instead of rclone config, background uploads, and the apps around them. CloudMount isn’t made by the rclone project.

Each backend page says which rclone version its documentation comes from, which is the version in the current app. Settings → Help and about (Android) or Settings → About (Windows) shows the exact version it runs.

Does CloudMount copy my whole drive to my device?

Section titled “Does CloudMount copy my whole drive to my device?”

No. On Android, files are fetched when an app opens them, and recently used data is cached up to a limit. On Windows, folders and files appear as placeholders, and only files you open are downloaded. See Caching and uploads.

Yes, that’s the point. On Android, any app that uses the system’s file picker can open and save files on your drives. On Windows, your drives are folders that every app can use.

Does it work as a real drive letter or a folder on Android?

Section titled “Does it work as a real drive letter or a folder on Android?”

Not on Android: the Storage Access Framework gives apps documents, not paths, so apps that only read the phone’s file system can’t see your drives. Use a sync folder when you need ordinary files. On Windows, drives are real folders in your user profile, and each can also have a drive letter.

No. There’s no CloudMount server between your device and your storage, and your sign-ins are kept on your device (and, on Android, in its encrypted system backup if you allow it). See Security and privacy.

How do I keep files private from my storage provider?

Section titled “How do I keep files private from my storage provider?”

Make a vault: an encrypted folder on storage you already have, with a recovery kit for its key, on Android and Windows. An encrypted drive does the same with rclone’s settings. Either way, files are encrypted on your device before they’re uploaded.

Can I use the same drives on Android and Windows?

Section titled “Can I use the same drives on Android and Windows?”

Yes. Export your configuration on one and import it on the other; see Import and export. Pro is bought separately on each platform.

Why is my drive’s date or checksum missing?

Section titled “Why is my drive’s date or checksum missing?”

Not every service stores modification times or checksums. Each backend’s page shows what it supports; see Capabilities.

What happens to my files if I uninstall CloudMount?

Section titled “What happens to my files if I uninstall CloudMount?”

Nothing on your drives is deleted. On Android, uploads that hadn’t finished are lost, so wait for them first. On Windows, files you’d downloaded stay as ordinary files, and changes that hadn’t synced are never uploaded. See Uninstalling.
